Season in Review: Track and Field

STANFORD, Calif. – Chris Miltenberg knew this would be a big year for Stanford. And it wasn't just the Franklin P. Johnson Director of Track and Field who approached the outdoor season with such anticipation. With so many great athletes, and developing ones, on the roster at the same time, the Cardinal had much to look forward to.

The NCAA Championships played out in remarkable and dramatic fashion. The Stanford women led through 16 of the 21 events and had a chance to win until the second-to-last event, ultimately falling short of their first NCAA team crown by two points.

The Stanford men followed up a second-place finish at the Pac-12 Championships with eighth at NCAA's -- giving the Cardinal men and women top-10 finishes.

At the NCAA's, the Stanford men and women combined for four school records, two victories, a second place, five thirds, two fourths, and a fifth. Fifteen individuals contributed to Stanford's scoring. And the 22 athletes competing were the most for Stanford since 2005.

There was a 1-2 NCAA finish in the women's javelin with by winner Mackenzie Little and Jenna Gray, and a first and third in the men's 5,000 by Sean McGorty and Grant Fisher.

Stanford's sustained success in cross country and indoor and outdoor track earned the Terry Crawford Program of the Year award for the Cardinal women, and the Card was third in the men's rankings.

Stanford crowned five All-Americans in cross country, 13 in indoor track, and 20 in outdoor track. Altogether, 22 different individuals – 12 women and 10 men – earned All-America honors in any of the three seasons and there were 31 first-team All-America honors in both indoor and outdoor track and field.

Led by NCAA champs Little and Fisher (2017, 5,000) and U.S. third-place decathlete Harrison Williams, there will be plenty to look forward to in 2019.
