STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford men's and women's track and field teams each were recognized as All-Academic Teams by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
The Cardinal women carried a 3.61 combined grade-point average and the men had a 3.44.
There were 220 NCAA Division I women's teams included on the academic lists, in which a 3.00 GPA is the standard. There were 141 men's teams.
Stanford was among 136 schools to earn All-Academic honors among both men and women. However, only 11 schools had both teams with GPA's of at least 3.40, and none besides Stanford had both men and women score at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Therefore, even among hundreds of programs honored, Stanford set itself apart.
Stanford track and field athletes have distinguished themselves by any measure. Twenty-five -- 16 women and nine men -- were named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic teams. The Pac-12's All-Academic teams included 53 Cardinal -- 27 men and 26 women -- and the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation's indoor All-Academic teams included 39 Cardinal -- 20 women and 19 men.
Individually, Stanford discus thrower Valarie Allman was named as one of two Pac-12 Women of the Year for athletic and academic achievements, as well as community service. Elise Cranny, a middle-distance All-American, was named to the women's CoSIDA Academic All-America first team and Tai Dinger was a men's second-team selection. Cranny also earned an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
