Macario Shines in Win

STANFORD, Calif. – No. 1 Stanford claimed a 2-0 win over Arizona to extend its program-record unbeaten streak to 31 games on Friday night at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium.

"We created a lot of chances and Arizona is always a tough team to break down," said the Knowles Family Director of Women's Soccer Paul Ratcliffe. "I thought our possession and build-up play was overall very strong, I would have liked to have seen us capitalize on it a little more, but overall it was a strong performance for us."

The Cardinal (8-0-1, 1-0-0 Pac-12) held a commanding 31-6 lead in shots over the Wildcats (7-2-0), which had won seven straight entering the league opener. Catarina Macario scored her fourth goal of the season and added an assist, and Jordan DiBiasi's goal in the 80th minute doubled the lead to put the game to bed.

Alison Jahansouz (6-0-1) made two saves to earn the shutout, and Stanford's back line showed its class on the ball to continuously play through Arizona's press. The Cardinal had several chances to open the scoring but entered halftime tied, 0-0, despite outshooting Arizona, 12-1.

Stanford increased the pressure after the break with Sophia Smith nearly breaking the tie in the 51st and 56th minutes. In the 57th minute, Macario nodded home her third of the season off of Jaye Boissiere's free kick. Boissiere's lofted ball into the area was flicked on by Naomi Girma and finished by Macario from close range.

After Jahansouz made a key save in the 71st minute to maintain Stanford's advantage, DiBiasi doubled the lead in the 80th minute to essentially seal the win. Macario collected a loose ball on the left wing, creating a yard of space before putting it on a plate for a streaking DiBiasi in the box.

Macario led the team with eight shots while DiBiasi and Smith had five apiece.

No. 1 Stanford returns to action next week when it plays host to No. 8 UCLA on Thursday and No. 3 USC on Sunday, wrapping up a seven-game homestand at Cagan Stadium. Thursday's contest kicks off at 8 p.m. with Sunday's game slated for 1 p.m. – both games will air on Pac-12 Networks. Limited tickets remain for both games and are available at GoStanford.com.
