World Cup Gets Underway

STANFORD, Calif. – Five Stanford alumnae and two undergraduates will be on national team rosters for the FINA World Cup starting Tuesday in Surgut, Russia.
 
Six of the 13 players on the United States are from Stanford, led by USA captain Maggie Steffens. Steffens is joined by fellow alums Jamie and Kiley Neushul and Jordan Raney along with junior Makenzie Fischer and sophomore Aria Fischer. Gurpreet Sohi, a 2016 graduate, is playing for Canada at the World Cup. Both the U.S. and Canada are in Group B.
 
The United States, on a 20-game winning streak, begins group play against New Zealand at 2:30 a.m. PT on Tuesday. Team USA will face South Africa on Wednesday (6 a.m. PT) and Canada Thursday (6 a.m. PT) before the quarterfinals start on Friday.
 
Sohi and Canada open with South Africa tomorrow morning (5:30 a.m. PT) and play New Zealand Wednesday (4:30 a.m. PT). They'll close out group play with the United States on Thursday.
 
Steffens and Kiley Neushul won gold at the last FINA World Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia in 2014. All USA Water Polo veterans, the other four Americans will be making their tournament debuts.
