PRINCETON, N.J. – No. 4 Stanford picked up a pair of double-digit victories Saturday morning to improve to 3-0 at the season-opening Princeton Invitational. The Cardinal posted a 15-5 win over St. Francis Brooklyn, before recording a 23-6 victory over Johns Hopkins at Princeton's DuNunzio Pool.
Sophomore Ben Hallock accounted for seven of Stanford's 38 goals on the day, registering four against the Terriers and three against the Blue Jays. Sophomore Tyler Abramson was right behind with six goals in the two contests.
The Cardinal began with an early morning contest against St. Francis Brooklyn, jumping on top, 3-2, after one quarter before stretching the advantage to 10-2 at the half with all seven goals of the second period. Abramson scored three of his four goals in the contest in the second quarter, while junior Bennett Williams and Hallock each recorded two goals in the first half for the Cardinal.
Stanford out-scored the Terriers, 5-3, in the second half to give the Cardinal the double-digit win (15-5) in the end.
While Abramson and Hallock led the way with four scores apiece, Williams posted another hat trick with three goals. Freshman Jackson Seybold scored his first collegiate goals with a pair of scores against the Terriers.
On his birthday, senior Oliver Lewis posted 14 saves in goal for the Cardinal against St. Francis Brooklyn.
Stanford's second 20-goal performance in three matches came a couple hours later, as the Cardinal downed Johns Hopkins in convincing fashion in its second match of the day. A 5-3 lead after one quarter quickly ballooned into an 11-3 advantage for the Cardinal at the half and an 18-3 lead in the third quarter with 13 unanswered goals during the span.
Sophomore Duncan Mactavish led nine different Stanford scorers in the match with a team-best four goals. Hallock posted his third hat trick in as many contests with three scores. Senior Blake Parrish, Seybold and fellow freshman Josh Orrick also posted hat tricks with three goals each in the win.
Lewis played the first three quarters in the cage, posting 10 saves. He handed it over to freshman George Hagestad to begin the fourth. Making his collegiate debut, Hagestad finished with two saves in the period.
Stanford will close the weekend-long Princeton Invitational Sunday with a 10:45 a.m. PT match against Navy.
