BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Sophomore Corinne Zanolli capped off her weekend with a bang, highlighting an explosive offensive team performance as No. 20 Stanford cruised past Central Michigan 8-0 on Sunday for a three-game sweep through Bloomington.
After already accounting for seven goals through the past two games, Zanolli powered home three more for the Cardinal (3-3, 0-0 America East), which dominated every offensive category — Stanford outshot the Chippewas (1-6, 0-0 MAC) 25-2 and won all nine penalty corners on the afternoon.
Stanford built a 4-0 halftime lead thanks to a relentless offensive attack. Isabelle Pilson opened the scoring in the second minute, Emma Christus picked up her first two goals of the season, and Zanolli slotted her first of the day to put the Cardinal out of reach at the break.
After the break, Stanford kept up the offensive pressure. Zanolli added another goal just five minutes into the half, and then Phoebe Crosthwaite scored twice in two minutes — her first two goals of the season — to put the Cardinal ahead 7-0. Zanolli picked up her hat trick to close the scoring in the 65th minute.
Zanolli now has 10 goals in the past three games as she looks to surge past her impressive total of 15 from last season, and she also added two assists to help her teammates get on the scoreboard. Junior attacker Jessica Welch was another key player in the offensive attack, with two assists and a shot on the afternoon.
The Cardinal held the Chippewas without a shot during junior Kelsey Bing's 60 minutes in net. CMU had two shots in the final minutes of the game, but freshman Hannah Santos was there to pick up the first two saves of her collegiate career and preserve a hard-fought shutout.
Stanford, which has been on the road for five of the first six games of the season, returns to The Farm for a four-game home swing. The homestand begins Friday night at 7 p.m. when the Cardinal hosts Yale on the Varsity Turf.
