Duel Ends in Draw

PULLMAN, Wash. – Catarina Macario scored another extraordinary goal as No. 1 Stanford played out a 1-1 draw at Washington State on Sunday at Lower Soccer Field.

The Cardinal (15-0-2, 8-0-1) extended its program-record unbeaten streak to 39 games while its 26-game Pac-12 win streak came to an end. Stanford outshot the Cougars (11-5-1, 4-5-1) 34-16, including a 13-5 advantage in shots on goal, and Alison Jahansouz made four saves. The Cardinal controls its own destiny atop the Pac-12 standings with two games to go despite allowing its first goal in 628:01 minutes of play.

Stanford had a fantastic scoring chance in the second minute after Macario picked out Jojo Harber with a fine cross. Harber brought it down and fired from the six-yard line but Rachel Thompson made a brilliant save to keep the game scoreless. In the 17th minute, Macario played Harber through on goal again but her shot found the side netting.

Macario tested Thompson again in the 22nd and 32nd minutes before Stanford survived a wave of pressure from the Cougars. Alana Cook made a solid block to break up a Washington State counter, and Jahansouz's save to her right in the 37th minute denied the Cougars' opener.

In the 41st minute, Macario scored a goal of the highest quality. The sophomore tracked a clearance high in the air at the edge of the box, controlling it above the surface with two perfect touches before bending a volley inside the far post with the outside of her right foot. Madison Haley and Michelle Xiao both hit the post in the final seconds of the half as Stanford entered the break with a 1-0 lead.

Beattie Goad and Jordan DiBiasi opened the second half with a double chance, but both shots were denied by fantastic saves. Goad had another scoring chance in the 57th minute, and Alison Jahansouz made two key stops in the 64th and 72nd minutes.

Washington State bagged the equalizer in the 77th minute with Morgan Weaver intercepting Jahansouz's pass and finishing into an open net – it was Stanford's first goal conceded since Sept. 27. Naomi Girma forced another outstanding save by Thompson in the 83rd minute before 90 minutes ran out and the contest went to overtime.

Both teams had scoring chances in the first period of overtime. Alana Cook made a fantastic block in front of Jahansouz's net to deny Morgan Weaver, and Jaye Boissiere dragged it wide from 25 yards in an end-to-end period. Stanford had the best scoring chance in the second period of overtime when Boissiere's cross nearly found the boot of DiBiasi on the six-yard line before the clock ran out.

No. 1 Stanford wraps up the regular season next week with trips to California at 3 p.m. on Friday and Arizona State at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Friday's game will air on Pac-12 Networks with Sunday's regular-season finale set to stream live at GoStanford.com.
