Streak Snapped

Iowa City, Iowa - No. 10 Iowa proved too strong for No. 21 Stanford today, pulling out a 3-0 victory, but the Cardinal heads home from Iowa City, Iowa, with a 1-1 split against two top-10 opponents, thanks to Saturday's 4-2 win over No. 6 Michigan.

For Stanford (8-4, 1-0 America East), it's the first loss since a 2-1 OT defeat against Syracuse on Sept. 1. The Cardinal had won eight straight games, including the America East opener against UC Davis last Sunday, for the team's longest streak since the 2014 season.

The Hawkeyes (11-3, 3-2 Big Ten) applied pressure on the Cardinal from the start, breaking through in the 15th and 28 minutes to build a 2-0 halftime lead. Iowa outshot the Cardinal 8-1 and led 3-0 in penalty corners at the intermission.

For the first 30 minutes of the second half, neither team was able to break through. Kelsey Bing continued her strong weekend with four saves — three coming in the second half — to keep the game close, but Iowa eventually went ahead 3-0 to seal the victory with just under five minutes to play.

With this weekend's trip to Iowa complete, the Cardinal only has one non-conference game remaining in the regular season, which will come against William & Mary on Oct. 15 at the Varsity Turf. The other five matchups will all be against America East conference opponents, as the Cardinal will look to improve on its 1-0 conference record.

Stanford now returns to The Bay for the first of two rivalry games against Cal this season. The Cardinal will travel to Berkeley to take on the Golden Bears Friday at 4 p.m. on Pac-12 Networks.
