STANFORD, Calif. - If the first tournament of the fall season is any indication, Stanford once again appears to be stacked in doubles.
Caroline Lampl and Kimberly Yee produced a runner-up finish in the main draw while Emily Arbuthnott and Michaela Gordon captured the consolation title, highlighting the Cardinal's season-opening performances at this weekend's ITA All-American Championships.
Ranked No. 17 to begin the preseason, Lampl and Yee dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Kansas' unranked pairing of Nina Khmelnitckaia and Janet Koch in the final. Lampl and Yee reached Sunday's championship match by knocking off a pair of top-10 tandems along the way. Stanford's No. 2 team for all of last season, Lampl and Yee finished 18-5 overall and 17-4 in duals during the 2017 campaign.
Stanford's top pairing of Arbuthnott and Gordon, ranked No. 3 in the preseason, took a different route to winning their second doubles titles. After losing to Khmelnitckaia and Koch in the second round of the main draw, Arbuthnott and Gordon dropped to the consolation bracket but rattled off three straight victories, with Sunday's 8-3 win over Winthrop's Megan Kauffman and Lauren Proctor serving as the final statement. Arbuthnott and Gordon comprised Stanford's top doubles team in 2017, finishing 17-8 overall, 9-6 in duals and earning a final No. 6 national ranking. Arbuthnott and Gordon won their first title together last November at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships.
Stanford returns to action Oct. 19, hosting the ITA Northwest Regional Championships at Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
