LIONS' LAST VISITVanguard last visited Stanford for an exhibition on Nov. 2, 2014. Erica McCall (15 points/10 rebounds) and Kaylee Johnson (12 points, 16 rebounds) each had double-doubles and Karlie Samuelson added 17 points off the bench in 19 minutes, was 5-of-10 from the floor and 3-of-6 from behind the arc.  the Cardinal scored on 48 of 77 possessions and averaged 15 seconds per possession. As a team, Stanford shot 53.9 percent from the field (41-of-76) and the team's five starters were 27-of-47 (57.4 percent).


PRESEASON NO. 7Stanford will open the regular season ranked seventh in the Associated Press women's basketball poll, the 19th consecutive season the Cardinal has appeared in the preseason AP rankings. The Cardinal has now appeared in the AP rankings 530 times out of 750 total polls since 1977 (70.6 percent), with an average positioning of 7.4. Stanford AP poll appearances are fourth all-time behind Tennessee (717), Texas (540) and Georgia (531) and its 392 appearances in the top 10 are third behind Tennessee (612) and Connecticut (455).


WATCH LISTSSenior Alanna Smith is on the preseason watch list for the Katrina McClain Award, which honors the nation's best power forward, and sophomore Kiana Williams is up for the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award given to the country's best shooting guard. Smith, also on the five-person preseason All-Pac-12 team, is Stanford's leading returning scorer and rebounder. She started all 35 games as a junior and averaged 13.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.77 blocks in 28.4 minutes. Williams played in all 35 games a year ago and averaged 10.4 points on 41.4 percent shooting (128-of-309), including a 38.4 percent clip from deep (71-of-185), 1.7 rebounds and 1.9 assists. She was fourth in the conference in 3-point percentage (.384) and fifth in makes (71). Her 71 made triples are the second most for a Stanford freshman in program history.


KARL GONNA KARLStanford aluma Karlie Samuelson is in her second season as an assistant coach at Vanguard while she simultaneously pursues her master's in coaching and athletic administration from Concordia University in Irvine. Samuelson, whose 249 career 3-pointers are third in Stanford history, ended her career with the best 3-point percentage for any Pac-12 player since 1990 (.443). The 2017 graduate just finished her first season as a member of the Los Angeles Sparks and is currently playing with BC Castors Braine in Belgium.
