STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford junior Bennett Williams was voted the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week on Monday.
Williams scored a team-best four goals, including the game winner with 1:51 remaining in overtime as No. 3 Stanford earned a 12-11 overtime victory over No. 4 California in the Big Splash in Berkeley Saturday. The Cardinal junior was equally as impressive on the defensive end, where he guarded California leading scorer Johnny Hooper. He held the Golden Bear standout to just one goal in the contest.
The win over the Golden Bears secured Stanford's second consecutive MPSF regular-season title and the No. 1 seed in this weekend's MPSF Championships.
Williams ranks second on the team with 51 goals this season.
Monday marked the fifth MPSF weekly honor for a member of the Cardinal this season. Ben Hallock was named the Player of the Week on Oct. 8 and Oct. 29. Oliver Lewis was recognized as the Player of the Week on Sept. 24. Jackson Seybold was voted the Newcomer of the Week on Oct. 22.
Stanford will begin play in the MPSF Championships on Saturday at USC's Uytengsu Aquatics Center. The Cardinal will face either UCLA, Austin College or Penn State Behrend at 3 p.m. in the tournament's semifinal round.
