BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Sophomore Dominick Mandarino and freshman Shane Griffith won tournament titles, while 13 Cardinal placed overall at the Roadrunner Open, Sunday, at the Icardo Center.
Mandarino defeated Cardinal teammate and 2017 All-American Paul Fox in the finals at 157 pounds. The sophomore posted an 8-5 decision over Fox, who was competing for the first time this season, and finished the tournament 4-0 overall.
Griffith knocked off 17th-ranked Andrew Fogarty of North Dakota State in the championship bout at 165 pounds. It is the second tournament win for the true freshman, who was wrestling unattached, as he also captured the Princeton Open crown on Nov. 4.
Fox finished as the runner-up at 157 pounds after defeating teammates Tyler Eischens, 9-4, and Jared Hill, 9-4, to reach the finals. Fifth-year senior Rico Stormer also came in second place at 174 pounds, going 4-1 in the tournament, while heavyweight Trevor Rasmussen was 3-1 with a second-place outing.
Eischens (157), Brandon Dallavia (165), Foster Karmon (174), Colbey Harlan (184) and Haydn Maley (285) all came in fourth for the Cardinal. Redshirt junior Austin Flores took fifth at 184 pounds despite having to medically forfeit two matches, while Jared Hill (157) and David Showunmi (285) both took sixth.
At 149 pounds, Stanford commit and high school senior Jaden Abas finished third in the open tournament.
