Three Still Alive in Vegas

LAS VEGAS - Three Cardinal wrestlers have advanced to the second day of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite, Friday, at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

No. 20 Gabriel Townsell (125 pounds), Dominick Mandarino (157 pounds) and No. 8 Nathan Traxler are all still alive in the consolation brackets after Friday's competition.

Townsell was 3-1 on Friday with his lone loss coming at the hands of No. 17 Drew Mattin of Michigan, 10-3. The junior will face No. 15 Devin Schroder of Purdue as the tournament continues on Saturday.

After opening the tournament with a loss to seventh-ranked KeShawn Hayes of Ohio State, Mandarino bounced back to post three straight decisions and move on to day two of the tournament. The sophomore will take on No. 3 Tyler Berger of Nebraska in his first match on Saturday.

Traxler opened his tournament with a fall over Fresno State's Danny Salas in 3:23 before being upset in the second round by Virginia's Jay Aiello, 5-4. The redshirt sophomore posted a 15-6 major decision against Navy's Joshua Roetman in the consolation bracket. Traxler then recorded a 15-11 decision over 10th-ranked Stephen Loiseau of Drexel. Because No. 20 Ben Honis of Cornell medically forfeitted his match versus Traxler, which would have taken place Saturday morning, Traxler now awaits the winner between Cordell Eaton (North Dakota State) and Tanner Orndorff (Utah Valley).

Going 2-2 for the Cardinal on Friday were Requir van der Merwe (149 pounds), Rico Stormer (174 pounds), Colbey Harlan (184 pounds) and Haydn Maley (285 pounds).

Wrestling on Saturday gets underway at 9 a.m. with Round 7 - Consolation 2nd of (8).
