STANFORD, Calif. – Abrahm DeVine and Grant Shoults earned places on Team USA for the Pan Pacific Championships after outstanding showings at last week's Phillips 66 National Championships in Irvine, California, as announced Monday by USA Swimming.

Both swimmers are eligible to compete in any event at the Pan Pacific Championships, which will be help from Aug. 9-12 in Tokyo. DeVine (1:57.41), the reigning Pac-12 Swimmer of the Year, finished second in the 200-meter individual medley to punch his ticket with Team USA for the second straight year. Shoults (3:46.90) finished second in the 400-meter freestyle to earn his first berth on the United States' senior team.

DeVine dropped over one second from prelims to continue his exceptional 2018 with second place in the 200-meter individual medley. It is the second consecutive summer DeVine has swam for team USA after competing in the 2017 World Championships. DeVine (4:13.77) also improved his prelim time in the 400-meter individual medley, finishing fifth.

Shoults (3:46.90) dropped 1.39 seconds from his preliminary swim to finish second in the A-final, .07 seconds ahead of Andrew Abruzzo. Classmate True Sweetser (3:51.98) finished seventh after swimming 3:50.08 in prelims to make the A-final. Incoming freshman Jack LeVant (3:52.01) finished third in the B-final after finishing in 3:51.33 in prelims.

Sweetser (7:56.08) led the Cardinal in the 800-meter freestyle, finishing sixth, also pacing Stanford in the 1,500-meter freestyle with 15:10.65. Shoults (8:05.69) placed 21st and Matthew Hirschberger (8:12.04) finished 40th in the 800 free – Hirschberger (15:44.62) was also 34th in the 1,500 free.

LeVant (1:46.39) set a world junior record in the 200-meter freestyle prelims, going on to finish fifth in the A-final with 1:46.46. Shoults and Abrahm DeVine each qualified for the 200 free B-final – Shoults (1:47.86) lowered his time to place fifth with DeVine (1:47.78) also improving his time to take fourth.

Incoming freshman Daniel Roy (2:09.76) finished sixth in the 200-meter breaststroke, qualifying for the A-final with the sixth-fastest time in prelims. LeVant (1:56.43) was eighth in the 200-meter butterfly – he finished third in prelims with 1:55.89.

  • LeVant was named Junior Swimmer of the Meet by SwimSwam, and Stanford was named Team of the Meet honorable mention. 
  • Ben Ho (26.09) qualified 22nd in the 50-meter backstroke, eventually finishing 22nd (26.21) in the C-final.
  • Incoming freshman Alex Boratto (55.76) won the D-final of the 100-meter backstroke after swimming 55.68 in prelims. Boratto (2:01.65) also placed 26th in the 200-meter backstroke. Boratto's 26.30 in the 50-meter backstroke B-final was good for the lowest U-18 time at the meet. 
  • Matt Anderson (28.36) won the C-final of the 50-meter breaststroke after swimming 28.10 in prelims.
  • Roy (1:01.86) finished third in the C-final of the 100-meter breaststroke. Roy swam 1:01.56 in prelims to qualify 19th.
  • Incoming freshman Mason Gonzalez (23.47) finished seventh in the 50-meter freestyle D-final – he swam 23.27 in the morning swim to qualify.
