BERKELEY, Calif. – Sophomore Kyla Bryant won her third consecutive all-around title and No. 24 Stanford collected season highs in every event, but it wasn't enough to upset No. 12 Cal on Monday night in the tightly-contested Pac-12 opener at Haas Pavilion.
After capturing its first two meets on the road, Cardinal players knew they would have to raise their performance to prevail and they did. Battling from behind all evening, Stanford hung with the Bears from start to finish.
"Especially after last weekend," head coach Tabitha Yim said, referring to her squad's tri-meet win against Sacramento State and Seattle Pacific. "We were disappointed in the way we ended the meet. What I was really pleased with is this team had a lot of fight. It wasn't really led by the coaches, but for the first time, I saw them get really angry and raise their expectations."
Stanford topped 195.000 for the first time in 2019 and won floor exercise (49.175) and vault (49.150).

Bryant led the way again, tying for first in floor (9.925) and finished fifth or higher in every event, sharing fourth on vault (9.850) and bars (9.825) and fifth on beam (9.825). She has won eight titles this season.

Sophomore Rachael Flam had a terrific meet, tying for first on vault (9.875) and placed second on beam and all-around (39.150).
Yim praised the contributions of every team member.
"We still made mistakes, but the next routine was always a big hit," she said. "That showed a lot of heart, grit and growth. If we continue to achieve in that way, we'll be able to achieve our goals this season."
Stanford kicks off its home schedule against No. 2 UCLA on Sunday at 4 p.m. in Maples Pavilion. Tickets can be purchased in advance and online and are $10 for reserved seats and $8 for general admission. Gameday prices are $12 for reserved and $10 for general admission.
