Cardinal Crushes Cal Baptist

STANFORD, Calif. - Behind falls from Foster Karmon and Nathan Traxler, No. 22 Stanford dominated Cal Baptist in a 40-4 dual win, Friday, at Burnham Pavilion.

Stanford won nine of the 10 bouts and improved to 6-0 on the season, while Cal Baptist fell to 1-3 overall.

Wrestling in his first dual for the Cardinal, Karmon registered a fall in 4:30 over Cal Baptist's Bryce Buckley at 165 pounds. The redshirt freshman dropped down from 174 to fill a hole in the Cardinal lineup.

Traxler, who is ranked No. 9 in the nation at 197 pounds, man-handled Ali'i Loyola from the start. The redshirt sophomore earned the second-period fall in 4:07 for his fifth pin of the season, tying Haydn Maley for the team lead.

The dual began at 141 pounds, where the Lancers scored their only points of the dual as redshirt freshman Zander Silva earned an 11-1 major decision over Stanford redshirt freshman Jack Ramalia.

The Cardinal quickly gained the lead as No. 15 Requir van der Merwe picked up a win by forfeit and put six points on the board. Fifth-year senior Paul Fox added to the lead with a 13-2 major decision over Jaron Pagaduan at 157 pounds. Fox scored eight points in the opening period with two takedowns and four near fall points. He added a reversal in the second and another takedown in the third. He finished with 5:12 of riding time as he moved to 17-6 on the season.

At 174 pounds, Rico Stormer remained undefeated in duals this season with a 10-4 decision over Garrett Strang. Stormer moved to 6-0 in duals and 15-7 on the season. A graduate transfer from Harvard, Stormer joined the Cardinal with just 13 career wins. 

Stanford continued to over power Cal Baptist as redshirt junior Austin Flores earned a 15-0 technical fall against Arick Lopez at 184 pounds. Maley shut out heavyweight Zach Schrader, 6-0, to improve to 18-7 on the year. 

Back in the lineup this week, Gabriel Townsell had a close match with a lot of action at 125 pounds. He held off Antonio Saldate, 16-13, to pick up his 13th victory of the year. Fifth-year senior Mason Pengilly capped off the scoring with a 13-2 major decision over Adam Velasquez at 133 pounds. Pengilly moves to 4-0 in duals this season.

Stanford will be back in action on Sunday to open the Pac-12 portion of its schedule at CSU Bakersfield. Wrestling begins at 2 p.m. at the Icardo Center.
