Cardinal Cruises in Opener

BERKELEY, Calif. – Sophomore Sarah Klass scored a career-high five goals, freshman Madison Stamen added four in her debut and No. 2 Stanford opened its 2019 season with a 25-4 win over No. 11 Long Beach State at the Cal Cup in Berkeley.
 
Klass and Stamen were two of five Cardinal with hat tricks in the rout, along with junior Makenzie Fischer (3), senior Kat Klass (3) and freshman Ryann Neushul (3). Sophomore Aria Fischer also scored twice.
 
The game was tied 2-2 midway through the first quarter before Stanford reeled off five straight to end the period. Aria Fischer (3:00), Kat Klass (2:30), Sarah Klass (2:08 and 1:18) and Stamen (0:11) all rattled the cage in the final three minutes to give the Cardinal a commanding 7-2 lead.
 
Stanford opened it up with a five-goal second quarter and didn't allow a score at the defensive end of the pool. Ryann Neushul scored her first collegiate goal in the 6-on-5 at 7:20 and Sarah Klass completed her first-half hat trick at 5:39. Kayla Constandse scored at 4:10, Hannah Shabb at 2:55 and Madison Stamen converted a penalty with 2:32 to go until the break to put Stanford on top 12-2 at halftime.
 
It was a 7-2 Cardinal edge in the third quarter with two goals from Kat Klass and one each from Mackenzie Wiley, Stamen, Aria Fischer, Makenzie Fischer and Neushul.
 
Long Beach State's fourth and final goal came on the power play at 5:32 in the third. The 49ers wouldn't score again over the final 13:32.
 
Stanford fired in six more in the final frame to reach its total of 25, the program's highest offensive output since a 25-8 victory over Wagner at the NCAA championship on May 11, 2007.
 
The Cardinal continues at the Cal Cup on Sunday with a pair of games against No. 17 Fresno State (9:45 a.m.) and No. 14 San Jose State (2:15 p.m.)
