Defense Stifles Mastodons

STANFORD, Calif. – Scrappy defense and solid offense led No. 8 Stanford to a 25-17, 25-21, 25-23 win over No. 15 Purdue Fort Wayne, Saturday, in Burnham Pavilion.
 
Stanford improved to 7-1 overall, eclipsing its win total from a year ago. The Cardinal hit .368 against the Mastodons (4-4) and racked up 32 digs and 7.0 blocks in the win.
 
Setter Paul Bischoff controlled the offense with 30 assists to go with four blocks. The junior matched teammates Leo Henken and Kyle Dagostino with a match-high seven digs.
 


Henken, who started at outside hitter for a second straight match in place on an injured Eric Beatty, hit .600 with seven kills on 10 swings with just one error. He was one of four Cardinal to record an ace.
 
Sophomore opposite Jaylen Jasper posted a team-high 11 kills on .400 hitting, four digs, a block and an ace. Senior outside hitter Jordan Ewert added nine kills, six digs and an ace.
 
Stanford won the sideout battle, registering a 71 percent sideout rate to just 58 percent by Purdue Fort Wayne. The Mastodons were hurt by 19 service errors as the Cardinal limited its miscues from the line to just six.
 


Sophomore middle blocker Kyler Presho chipped in with five kills and three blocks, while junior Stephen Moye had three kills, three blocks and an ace.

Purdue Fort Wayne was led by fifth-year senior Colton Stone, who recorded a match-high 15 kills on a .379 attack percentage. As a team, the Mastodons hit .278 and finished with 4.0 blocks and four aces.

Up next, Stanford hits the road for the first time this season, traveling to No. 2 Hawaii for a pair of matches on Feb. 1 and Feb. 3 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
