Setback in Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - For the first time this season, No. 22 Stanford dropped a dual, falling 20-13 at CSU Bakersfield, Sunday, at the Icardo Center.

The Cardinal (6-1, 0-1 Pac-12) won just four of the 10 bouts against the Roadrunners (5-7, 2-1 Pac-12), snapping its six-dual winning streak.

Fifth-year senior Paul Fox put the most points on the board for the Cardinal with a 14-4 major decision over Wyatt Gerl at 157 pounds. He is now 18-6 overall and 3-3 in duals this season.

The dual began at 133 pounds. Redshirt sophomore Requir van der Merwe scored the first team points for Stanford at 149 pounds with a 4-1 decision over Russell Rohlfing to move to 17-6 and 6-1 in duals.

Redshirt sophomore Nathan Traxler, who is ranked No. 9 nationally at 197 pounds, earned an 8-2 decision against Mark Penyacsek. Traxler now has a team-high 21 wins on the season and is a perfect 7-0 in duals.

Redshirt freshman Haydn Maley came up short in sudden victory at heavyweight, falling to Jarrod Snyder, 3-1, which put the dual out of reach for the Cardinal.

Junior Gabriel Townsell closed out the dual with a 7-4 decision over Edward Flores at 125 pounds. Townsell picked up his second win of the weekend and is now 14-6 overall and 4-1 in duals.

Stanford returns to The Farm on Saturday, continuing Pac-12 action against No. 12 Arizona State. The dual will begin at 1 p.m. in Burnham Pavilion. Admission is free.
