BERKELEY, Calif. – Highlighted by the best pommel horse score in the nation this year (69.000), Stanford recorded a 415.800 team score to best California (404.000) on Saturday night from Haas Pavilion.
The Cardinal won five of the six events on Saturday night, with Ryan Sheppard and Bryan Perla sharing top honors on the floor, Trevor DiGerolamo winning the still rings, Connor Lewis capturing the vault, Brody Malone finishing first in the parallel bars, and David Jessen topping all-comers in the high bar.
Sheppard and Perla each registered a 14.450 on the floor, helping guide Stanford to a 70.200. The title is Perla's fourth overall this year, while Sheppard claims his second. Competing for the first time this season, Ben Swartout registered a 13.750 to capture a new career-high in the event. Malone (13.900) and Lewis (13.650) also turned in strong scores in the event.
The only event in which the Cardinal entered the week outside of the top-two in the nation (No. 8), Stanford managed a pair of career-highs and one season-best en route to the stellar pommel score. Jessen and Blake Sun each registered career-bests of 14.000, but it was Joey Ringer's season-high at 14.300 that led the way for Stanford. Freshman Ian Gunther also turned in a strong score, posting a mark of 13.500.
DiGerolamo had a career-day on the rings, posting a score of 14.450 to take first place for the first time in his career. Gunther followed with a 14.100, while Malone hit for a 13.900.
Always strong on the vault, Lewis won the event with a 14.350, followed by Perla at 14.150. For Lewis, the event title was his fourth overall this year, including his second on vault. Freshmen Blake Wilson and Gunther each turned in 13.900, with Wilson's vault serving as his first as a Cardinal. Sheppard rounded-out the top-five for the Card, registering a mark of 13.800.
Entering as the No. 1 team in the nation on parallel bars, the Cardinal got to count five scores of 13.850 or better in the event, led by Malone's career-best 14.350 to win the title. Jacob Barrus followed with a season-high 14.100, while Jessen hit for a 14.000 in his first parallel bars routine of the year. Curran Phillips got his first collegiate action as well, registering a 13.900, followed by Lewis with a career-best 13.850. With the event title, Malone has now secured five this year, but this is his first on parallel bars.
After winning the high bar at the Pac-12 Invitational last week with a score of 13.750, Jessen stepped it up even further on Saturday, posting a 14.000 to take top honors for the third time this year. Wilson, making his high bar debut, managed a 13.600, followed by Malone (13.450) and a career-best from Ringer (13.350).
Stanford will now send gymnasts to the Winter Cup from February 15-17 in Las Vegas. Team competition resumes on February 23 when the Card hosts the International Collegiate Open at 4 p.m. from Burnham Pavilion.
