Lee Shines in Setback

TEMPE, Ariz. – Senior Carolyn Lee struck out a career-high nine batters over 7.1 innings of work, but the Cardinal (4-1) dropped a 2-1 pitcher's duel to Weber State (2-3) in eight innings on Sunday to finish play at the Kajikawa Classic from Tempe, Ariz.

Playing with the tiebreaker rule in effect, Stanford was unable to plate a run in the top of the eighth, handing control over to the Wildcats in the bottom of the inning. A sacrifice bunt from Sydney White pushed pinch-runner Ali Belloc from second to third with one out. Following a pair of intentional walks to load the bases, Chloe Camarero delivered a soft line drive into left field for the game-winner.

Including the two intentional passes, Lee allowed just two runs (one earned) on five hits and four walks to go along with her nine punchouts. Unfortunately for the Card, Weber State answered with a strong outing from Tatiana Su'esu'e. The right-hander dealt 8.0 innings of one-run ball, surrendering just three hits and two walks with two strikeouts to improve to 2-1 on the season. The loss dropped Lee, who allowed just one baserunner from the third through the seventh inning, to 1-1 for the season.

The two teams traded an early run in the second, but that was all the offense either side could muster until the walk-off in the eighth. Stanford got on the board first after a one-out walk to freshman Emily Klingaman set the table for Emily Schultz' RBI-double into right-centerfield. That lead did not last long, as Courtney Pestka doubled with one out in front of an RBI-single from Emily Lyman to draw the Wildcats back even.

Schultz would finish the game 2-for-2 with the RBI-double, accounting for two of Stanford's three hits in the contest.

Stanford will now return home this week, hosting Pacific, Iowa State, Portland State and Colorado State at the DeMarini Invitational from Thursday through Sunday.
