Sun Devils Down Card

TEMPE, Ariz. – Senior Josh Sharma and sophomore Oscar da Silva combined for 32 points for Stanford, but the Cardinal could not overcome a late surge from Arizona State in an 80-62 defeat to the Sun Devils Wednesday night at Wells Fargo Arena.

The Cardinal (14-12, 7-7 Pac-12) and Sun Devils (18-8 overall, 9-5 Pac-12) were locked in a tight one throughout most of the game. Stanford trailed ASU, 57-50, with 8:23 remaining. Arizona State scored the next four points and 23 of the game's final 35 points to finish with the 18-point victory.

The win by ASU evened the season series between the two schools. Stanford defeated Arizona State, 85-71, in the first meeting on Jan. 19 at Maples Pavilion.

Sharma, the Pac-12's field goal percentage leader, continued his torrid pace, finishing 7-of-7 from the field. He scored a game-high 17 points to go along with seven rebounds. The senior center is 17-of-18 from the field over the last two games. Sharma is shooting 78.3 percent (65-of-83) in conference play.

Stanford, without leading scorer KZ Okpala on Wednesday, was hampered by a 2-of-21 shooting performance from beyond the arc.

Meanwhile, Arizona State shot 51.9 percent from the field, registering nine threes in the contest.

ASU held a 42-34 lead at the break and built its advantage to 11 early in the second half.

Behind six points from da Silva early, Stanford whittled its deficit to seven in the second half, but could not get any closer. The sophomore finished with 15 points and five rebounds in the contest. He has totaled 36 points in Stanford's two meetings with ASU this season.

Rob Edwards and Remy Martin scored 16 points each for Arizona State. Edwards scored 10 of his 16 during the Sun Devils' second-half surge.

Stanford returns home to California to attend classes Thursday and Friday, before venturing back to the desert over the weekend for a Sunday matchup with Arizona in Tucson.
