After sending eight Stanford-affiliated gymnasts to the Winter Cup last weekend, No. 2 Stanford will stay within the realm of international competition this week, welcoming Olympic Champion Japan, along with California, to Burnham Pavilion for the International Collegiate Open on Saturday at 4 p.m.
Five current Stanford student-athletes and three alumni competed at the 2019 Winter Cup in Las Vegas last week. Grant Breckenridge, Bailey Perez, Andrew Bitner, Ian Gunther and Curran Phillips all represented the Card from the current roster, while Akash Modi, Robert Neff and Eddie Penev represented the alumni. The top seven all-arounders automatically earned a spot on team on Friday night, with Neff and Modi both claiming a roster position.
Breckenridge, who qualified for the Sunday competition by way of a 78.550 in prelims, would register the best improvement in score among all the finalists, turning in an 81.850 – Sunday's fourth-best all-around score. At conclusion of the competition, Breckenridge earned the bronze medal in parallel bars (27.700), highlighted by a 14.100 in the Sunday finals.
Prior to the Winter Cup, Stanford turned in the best pommel horse score in the nation this year, posting a 69.000 at California on February 9. The Cardinal won five of the six events, with Ryan Sheppard and Bryan Perla sharing top honors on the floor, Trevor DiGerolamo winning the still rings, Connor Lewis capturing the vault, Brody Malone finishing first in the parallel bars, and David Jessen topping all-comers in the high bar. As a team, the Card recorded a 415.800 score – once again the highest in the nation for that week.
Following the International Collegiate Open, Stanford will hit the road to face No. 4 Minnesota and No. 5 Illinois on Saturday, March 2 in Champign, Ill.
