CHARLESTON, S.C./REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - Stanford sailing won on its home water for the second time in as many weeks with a victory at the McIntyre Team Race over the weekend. The Cardinal also finished as runner-up at the Charleston Women's regatta.
Stanford, which earned gold at the Bryson Women's in the San Francisco Bay to open the spring last week, won on its home water with a 15-1 record at the team race event.
Stanford's pairings included skipper John Kirkpatrick with crew Laurel Foster, skipper Telis Athanasopoulos Yogo with crew Mathew Hogan, and skipper Wiley Rogers with crew Victoria Thompson. The same Stanford contingent finished second last week at the Nelson Roltsch Team Race at Tulane.
Stanford was a perfect 9-0 in round robin competition and went 4-0 in the Gold Round before finishing 2-1 in the Final Four. The only Stanford blemish was to UC Santa Barbara, who finished the weekend 14-2 with both losses to the Cardinal. Hawaii finished third among the 10 schools with a 10-6 mark.
The Charleston Women's was limited to one day of competition due to the weather. The Cardinal finished second among the 10 schools with 67 points, ahead of the host Cougars (81 points) and just behind George Washington's winning score of 58.
Skipper Stephanie Houck and freshman crew Ashton Borcherding were second overall in the A division with 34 points. The duo finished in the top four in nine of the 10 races, including one victory and two second-place finishes. Meanwhile, freshman skipper Camille White and senior Cassie Obel were second in the B division with 33 points, including four second-place finishes and four third-place showings.
Next weekend, the Cardinal is slated for another trip to Charleston for the Bob Bavier Team Race, March 2-3.
