TEMPE, Ariz. – Competing against No. 11 California, No. 14 Arizona State and No. 17 Washington on Saturday from the Pac-12 Invitational, No. 2 Stanford posted a season-high 418.350 team score en route to earning a first-place finish. Cal placed second at 398.800, followed by host Arizona State (395.900) and Washington (377.950).

"We had some issues with guys getting ill, and had three from our roster out," head coach Thom Glielmi said after the meet. "With all of that, the team rallied and we were able to cover the events well. It was good to see them step up, and it resulted in our top score. It bodes well for how competitive it will be to make our lineup."

The Cardinal began the afternoon on pommel horse, where it registered its best team score of the year at 67.350. Stanford managed three scores that matched or topped the existing high score of the year, with David Jessen guiding the way with a career-best and event-high 13.950. Andrew Bitner and freshman Brody Malone equaled the previous season-high with scores of 13.650. Malone, who recorded the second-highest all-around score in the nation last week at Cal with a mark of 84.550, would ultimately capture the all-around title once more on Saturday by way of an 84.200.

Moving to the still rings in rotation two, Stanford boasted three new career-highs, but it was Josiah Eng's Stanford season-best of 14.800 that won the event title and pushed the Cardinal to the stellar 71.100 team score. Eng's performance would qualify for the third-best NCAA score of the year based on national marks headed into the week. Malone came up with the third-best score of the afternoon, registering a career-best 14.300, followed by new career-highs from Bitner (14.200) and Trevor DiGerolamo (14.100).

Junior Connor Lewis highlighted another strong effort on vault from Stanford, as Lewis nailed down a 14.850 to record a career-best and the highest Stanford score of the year. That mark is also tied for the second-highest score in the nation based on records entering the week. Malone, the reigning MPSF Gymnast of the Week, matched a career high with a 14.550, while Ryan Sheppard turned in a score of 14.150 in his first vault for Stanford this season. The Cardinal as a team put up a score of 71.500.

Entering the week ranked No. 1 in the nation in parallel bars, Stanford received a career-best 14.550 from Blake Sun – marking the second-highest score of the year for the Cardinal. Malone managed another score in the 14s, claiming a 14.000, to hand Stanford a 1-2 finish, before Sheppard posted a mark of 13.900 to claim fourth overall.

Having already captured the pommel horse title, Jessen returned to competition to deliver a 13.750 in the high bar to register a season-high and the second-best mark for Stanford this season. Senior Grant Breckenridge also managed a season-best in the event, posting a 13.700, to claim second overall.

Finishing with one of its strongest events, Stanford did not disappoint on the floor, with Sheppard registering a new season-high for the Cardinal at 14.700 to claim the event title. That mark is good for a share of third place in the national standings based on scores entering this week. Bailey Perez hit for a 14.300, Malone went 14.100, Bitner landed at 14.000, and Breckenridge narrowly-missed reaching the 14-point plateau by hitting a season-best 13.950.

Stanford will once again make the short trip to Cal next week, facing the Golden Bears on Saturday, February 9 at 6 p.m. from Haas Pavilion.
