Hitting the Mark

EVANSTON, Ill. – The Stanford fencing team concluded the regular season Sunday by competing in the Northwestern Duals, with the men earning a second-place finish in the two-day competition.
 
The men posted a 9-1 record, upsetting 2018 NCAA champion Notre Dame, 15-12. The lone loss came against Duke, 17-10.
 
The women's squad recorded a 4-6 mark, dropping close matches to Princeton and North Carolina.

Individually, freshman Julian Cheng, senior Sean Strong and junior Samuel Kwong led the men with outstanding regular seasons. Cheng finished 32-5 in foil, Strong went 27-6 in epee, and Kwong ended 28-7 in sabre.
 
On the women's side, Madeline Liao closed 20-9 in foil, freshman Hanna Lee was 31-11 in epee, and graduate student Kaleigh Mentzer finished 20-13 in sabre.
 
The Cardinal qualified 12 men and 10 women for the NCAA Regional Championships, March 10 in San Diego. The NCAA Championships are March 21-24 in Cleveland.
 
Men's qualifiers for the NCAA Regionals are Strong, Krueger, Aidan Kung and Kevin Tu in epee; Lucas Orts, Cheng, Justin Kang and Jainil Sutaria in foil; and Noah Matricciani, Kwong, Royce Wang and Jeffrey Dalli in sabre.
 
The women's team will be represented by Rose Adams, Kathy Hu, Mentzer and Carly Weber-Levine in sabre; Hanna Lee and Anna Widder in foil in epee; and Anna Lee, Woo Joo Kwong, Madeline Liao and Sophia Sanchez in foil.
