STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford senior javelin thrower Mackenzie Little earned national and conference recognition after her winning performance at the season-opening Hornet Invitational on Saturday in Sacramento.
For her distance of 194-3 (59.20 meters), Little was awarded the National Women's Athlete of the Week honor by the U.S. Track and Cross Country Coaches Association, and the Women's Field Athlete of the Week by the Pac-12 Conference.
The throw was the second-longest of Little's life and would have been placed her No. 3 on the all-time Pac-12 list if Little didn't already own the conference record of 198-0 (60.36m), which she set in winning the NCAA championship last spring.
Little, an Australian majoring in human biology, leads all collegians by 21 feet. She is a three-time Pac-12 champion and three-time NCAA first-team All-American.
Little is among 10 on the women's watch list for The Bowerman, collegiate track and field's highest honor.
This is the first time that an athlete from Stanford has been named National Athlete of the Week during the outdoor season.
