Eastin Wins Again

FEDERAL WAY, Wash.
- Senior Ella Eastin earned her second individual title at the Pac-12 Women's Swimming and Diving Championships and No. 1 Stanford extended its lead in the team standings on Friday inside Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.

The two-time defending Pac-12 and NCAA champion Cardinal lead the team standings heading into the final day of competition. Through 14 of 21 events, Stanford has totaled 1,154 points. Cal is second with 964.5 points, while USC is third with 724.
 1-2-4-5-6 FinishEastin led Stanford's 1-2-4-5-6 punch in the 400-yard individual medley. The Cardinal claimed five of the top six spots behind Eastin's eighth career individual conference title (10th overall), and second of the meet. Just one day after posting the fastest time in the nation in the 500 freestyle, the Irvine, California, native finished with the fastest time in the country in the 400 IM at 3:57.75.

Second-fastest in the NCAA this year? Sophomore Brooke Forde, who earned that spot when she stopped the clock at 4:00.27 to earn silver. Junior Allie Szekely was fourth (4:06.63) and was directly followed by two more Cardinal in senior Leah Stevens (4:08.31) and sophomore Hannah Kukurugya (4:08.53). Sophomore Katie Glavinovich was 11th at 4:11.76.

Stanford has now won this event each of the last four years—Eastin won as a freshman in 2016 and Katie Ledecky took home the title the last two years. Stanford has won the event 18 times overall, most in conference history.  

 

Diving PodiumFreshman diver Carolina Sculti earned a spot on the podium for the second straight night. The Rye, N.Y., native was in first entering the final dive and, one night after a third-place showing on the 1-meter, she earned silver on the 3-meter with a score of 346.45.

Junior Haley Farnsworth was fifth on the 3-meter with a score of 316.30 – the best finish of her career in this Pac-12 event. Meanwhile, sophomore Mia Paulsen also scored for the Cardinal with an eighth-place finish and score of 243.80.
 So CloseIn the closest race of the meet so far, sophomore Taylor Ruck was edged by six-hundreths of a second in the 100 backstroke. The Canadian Olympian earned the silver with the third-fastest time in Stanford history, 52.50.

Ruck was one of three Cardinal in the top five. Freshman Lucie Nordmann is now sixth in program history with a fourth-place finish of 51.47, while junior Erin Voss found a spot among the program's history books with the 10th-fastest time in school history and a fifth-place finish of 52.07.
 Scoring DepthStanford also showed off some new depth in the breaststroke. A pair of freshmen rearranged the school record book as Allie Raab and Zoe Bartel both broke 60 seconds in the 100. Raab finished fifth overall with a time of 59.60, which ranks seventh in program history, while Bartel finished seventh at 59.92 to move into ninth on the school's all-time list.

In addition, sophomore Grace Zhao and senior Kim Williams, who are already among Stanford's all-time Top 10, finished eighth (1:00.23) and 11th (1:00.29), respectively.  
 
In the 200 free, Lauren Pitzer posted the seventh-fastest finish in school history and finished fourth overall with a time of 1:43.50. She was one of five Cardinal to score in the event, which included freshman Morgan Tankersley in fifth (1:44.24), junior Katie Drabot in seventh (1:45.16), Nordmann in 15th (1:46.46) and junior Megan Byrnes in 20th (1:47.46).
 
Freshman Amalie Fackenthal was 12th overall in the 100 butterfly (52.82). Fackenthal was also the third leg on the 400 medley relay team which included Eastin, Raab and Pitzer, and finished third in 3:31.04.
 Up NextThe four-day championship meet concludes on Saturday. The final day of competition begins with swimming prelims at 10:30 a.m., and finals at 6 p.m. Events include the 1650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, platform diving and the 400 free relay.
