Strong Start in Vegas

LAS VEGAS – Sparked by junior Henry Shimp's career-best matching 4-under-par 68, Stanford is second after Sunday's opening round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate at Southern Highlands Golf Club.
 
The Cardinal combined for a score of 4-under 284 in the tough, 15-team field, one stroke behind pacesetter Georgia Tech at 5-under 283.
 
Shimp collected three birdies on each side and posted a pair of 2-under 34's, going back-to-back at No. 3 and 4 and 14 and 15. He is third individually.

Last month, Shimp fired a 4-under 68 in the second round of the Amer Ari Invitational in Hawaii.
 
Senior Brandon Wu forged four birdies and a 2-under 70 and is tied for fifth, while junior David Snyder recorded five birdies and a 71 to share eighth. Senior Isaiah Salinda (75) is tied for 45th and sophomore Nate Menon (78) is 69th.
 
Noah Norton of Georgia Tech and Jack Trent of UNLV lead the medalist race after posting 67's.
