PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. – No. 4 Stanford sits in second after day one of the Pac-12 Championship behind junior Albane Valenzuela, who leads the championship at 6-under par. Her 65 on Monday was the lowest round by a Cardinal all-time at the Pac-12 Championship, both in strokes and to-par, and matched the lowest score for a single round in Pac-12 Women's Golf Championship history. It was the 10th round in the 60s all-time by a Stanford women's golfer at the Pac-12 Championship. She holds a four-stroke lead after the first day of action at Palos Verdes Golf Club.

"The first few holes are key to setting the tone and we played them a little loose," Margot and Mitch Milias Director of Women's Golf Anne Walker said. "I liked the way we settled in and made up some ground on the back nine. There is never any doubt about this team's heart and commitment, they play hard and that's what kept us in it.

"Albane was phenomenal," Walker continued. "Her back nine was textbook golf, hitting all the right shots in all the right places and making the most of her opportunities."

Valenzuela is one of just five under par after the first day of the tournament, but no other golfer, besides her, was better than two-under par on the day. The junior from Geneva, Switzerland, had 12 pars and six birdies on the day, all six coming on the back nine. She made birdies on Nos. 11, 12, 14, 16, 17 and 18, shooting an impressive 30 on the back nine. The 65 was her fifth round in the 60s this season and her seventh round under par. It was the lowest round of her career by strokes, and matched her six-under, 66, from the third round of the 2018 NCAA Championships.

Andrea Lee and Mika Liu are tied at three-over following day one. Lee had a strong finish to her round, with nine pars and a birdie in the last 10 holes. Liu shot even on the back nine with two birdies and two bogeys. Ziyi Wang finished the day at five-over to round out the scoring for the Cardinal, while freshman Aline Krauter was nine-over par on the day.
