Cardinal Tops Aztecs

STANFORD, Calif. - Behind three hat tricks, No. 18 Stanford women's lacrosse cruised to an 18-9 victory over San Diego State in the nonconference finale at Cagan Stadium on Thursday afternoon. 

Junior Mikaela Watson (four goals), sophomore Ali Baiocco (four goals) and junior Jacie Lemos (three goals) led the Cardinal offensively. Watson finished with a career-high five points, while Lemos had a career-best four points.

Sophomore Trudie Grattan made six saves and allowed just five goals (.545 save percentage) in 40 minutes of action. Freshman Julia Cooper made three saves in 20 minutes of relief. 
 
How it Happened
Stanford (9-4) scored the first three goals and led 4-2 after the first 10 minutes. 

The Cardinal tallied the next six goals and led 10-2 after sophomore Katherine Gjertsen buried one of her two goals on the day at the 15:06 mark of the first half. 

Stanford's lead grew to 14-5 at the break, and a running clock started when Baiocco made it 15-5 with 27:46 to go.

Sophomore Gabby Noto was assisted by Gjertsen to give Stanford its biggest lead, 18-5, with 13:06 to play. San Diego State (8-5) scored the last four to close the gap to nine at the final buzzer. 

By the Numbers
Senior Julia Massaro led the Cardinal with five draw controls and four ground balls. Juniors Daniella McMahon and Kyra Pelton also scooped four ground balls each. Pelton had a team-high three caused turnovers and contributed to three draw control wins. Senior Genesis Lucero won three draw controls and caused two turnovers.

Stanford had eight different goal scorers and six different Cardinal contributed to seven assists. 

Stanford outshot the Aztecs, 28-25, and won 17 of 29 draw controls. The teams each scooped up 25 ground balls.

Stanford closes out the 2019 regular season with three Pac-12 contests, beginning with a trip to Colorado on April 12 and Oregon on April 14. Senior Day is set for April 19 against Cal.
