STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford travels to Gold River, California this week to compete in the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championships, to be held May 31st through June 2nd at the Sacramento State Aquatics Center.
After earning an automatic qualifier for placing third at the Pac-12 Championships two weeks ago, the Cardinal will be one of 24 programs in the IRA field, which is comprised of 17 automatic qualifiers and seven at-large berths. Stanford will race its varsity eight, second varsity eight and third varsity eight boats in the championship regatta.
Stanford's varsity eight placed fifth in the Petite Final and 11thoverall at last year's IRA Championship.
Racing will begin on Friday for the Cardinal with its varsity eight competing in heat 3 at 8:40 a.m. PST, against California, Princeton, Dartmouth, FIT and Hobart. The top two boats in each of the four heats will advance to Saturday's semifinals. All other boats will race in the Repchage, which is scheduled to start at 1:50 p.m. on Friday. The varsity eight Grand Final is scheduled for Sunday morning at 10:56 a.m.
The second varsity eight will race at 9:50 a.m. in Heat 4 on Friday morning alongside Brown, Princeton, Cornell, George Washington and UCSD. The Cardinal's third varsity eight will follow in Heat 1 at 10:10 a.m. versus Washington, Dartmouth, Northeastern and Hobart.
Again, the top two second varsity eight and third varsity eight boats of each heat will advance to Saturday's semifinals. Like the varsity eight competition, the remaining boats will compete in the Repechage later that day for another chance to earn a spot in the semifinals. The third varsity eight Grand Final is slated for 10:08 a.m. on Sunday morning, while the second varsity eight final will take place at 10:24 a.m.
