GOLD RIVER, Calif. – The Stanford men's rowing varsity eight and second varsity eight moved on to the semifinals after completing its heats and repechage races Friday during the opening day of the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships.

Racing on Lake Natoma at the Sacramento State Aqautics Center, Stanford's varsity eight had the top performance of its three entries. The varsity eight advanced to the top-level semifinal by winning its repechage Friday afternoon. Stanford completed the course in 5:47.881. Navy (5:49.424), Oregon State (5:59.951) and Santa Clara (6:01.864) rounded out the repechage heat. Earlier in the day, the varsity eight finished fourth in its morning heat with a time of 5:51.3. 

Stanford will face Yale, California, Brown, Northeastern and Cornell in Saturday's semifinals at 8:36 a.m.
 
In a very close finish, the second varsity eight placed third in its repechage Friday afternoon and will move on to the semifinals on Saturday. The Cardinal completed the course in 6:04.876, less than a second behind Pennsylvania (6:04.166). Northeastern (5:57.113) won the repechage. Earlier in the day, Stanford finished fourth in its heat with a time of 6:00.6. Brown (5:46.7) and Princeton (5:49.2) placed first and second, respectively. Cornell edged out Stanford with a time of 5:59.1. George Washington (6:01.9) and UC San Diego (6:11.6) placed fifth and sixth in the heat. 

The second varsity eight will face Wisconsin, Oregon State, UC San Diego and George Washington in Saturday's semifinal at 10:20 a.m.
 
Stanford's third varsity eight placed sixth in its repechage on Friday afternoon with a time of 6:23.569. Earlier in the day, the Cardinal finished fifth in its heat race with a time of 6:17.891.
