STANFORD, Calif. – No. 3 Stanford has earned the right to play one additional home match on Friday, with the payoff being a trip to the NCAA Championships.
In a format change introduced this season, the tournament's top eight seeds were awarded the right to host a Super Regional if they advanced from last week's first and second round competition. The Super Regional winners move on to the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, where eight teams will compete for the NCAA title from May 17-19.
After cruising past New Mexico State and Syracuse in the early rounds, defending NCAA champion Stanford (24-1, 10-0 Pac-12) welcomes No. 14 Kansas (21-4, 7-2 Big 12) to The Farm for a 2 p.m. match on Friday. Admission is free.
The Cardinal should receive a noticeable boost from playing at home, having won 61 of its last 64 contests at Taube Family Tennis Stadium dating back to 2015.
Riding a 19-match winning streak as one of the hottest teams in the country, Stanford is predictably clicking at the right time of year once again. The Cardinal is 46-5 during the month of May since 2010, a stretch that has produced four NCAA titles (2010, 2013, 2016, 2018).
The most decorated program in college history and the winningest program on The Farm, Stanford has won 19 of the possible 37 NCAA championships. Stanford owns a 155-19 all-time record in the postseason since the NCAA Tournament went to its present format in 1982. The Cardinal has won 20 national titles overall in school history, also claiming the 1978 AIAW crown.
Meanwhile, Kansas has reached the NCAA round of 16 for the first time since 1998. The Jayhawks may not boast the same level of championship experience but they have been ranked among the nation's top-20 for 15 straight weeks, reaching as high as No. 7. Kansas captured its first Big 12 crown three weeks ago, defeating Texas 4-2. It was the Jayhawks' first conference crown since winning the Big 8 title in 1996.
Since its only loss of the season to Georgia back on Feb. 11, Stanford has been legitimately tested only twice, collecting 4-3 road wins against UCLA and USC in late March. Of the Cardinal's 24 victories, 15 have been shutouts.
Stanford's superior depth has been a strength all season, with every member of its singles lineup earning a national ranking. The Cardinal's highest-ranked player at No. 24, Michaela Gordon (22-9 overall, 14-4 duals) was recently named the program's first Pac-12 Singles Player of the Year since Nicole Gibbs in 2012.
Also receiving all-conference recognition were Emily Arbuthnott (31-5 overall, 18-2 duals), Caroline Lampl (29-6 overall, 20-0 duals) and Melissa Lord (24-9 overall, 17-4 duals). Lampl has been the hottest of the trio, having won 22 consecutive matches since her last loss back on Jan. 18.
The Cardinal features three ranked doubles teams, led by Lampl and Yee (17-10 overall, 11-6 duals) at the No. 1 spot.
