Card Signs Five

STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford's Dunlevie Family Director of Men's Water Polo, John Vargas, announced the signing of five California standouts. Andrew Churukian (Atherton, California), Troy Gleason (Manhattan Beach, California), Beck Jurasius (Walnut Creek, California), Walker Seymour (Atherton, California) and Larsen Weigle (Atherton, California) bring tremendous athletic and academic credentials to an experienced Cardinal roster.
 
Churukian, a 6-3, 215-pound two-meter standout out of Sacred Heart Prep, scored 40 goals and added seven assists as a senior. He helped lead the Gators to a 26-2 overall record in 2018, completed his career with four CIF Central Coast Section titles. Sacred Heart Prep captured the CCS regular-season title this past season, but the tournament was not contested due to the poor air quality in the Bay Area from nearby wild fires. The Gators won the West Catholic Athletic League regular season and tournament titles in each of his four years. Churukian was a three-time All-West Catholic Athletic League selection. The 2017 San Mateo Daily Journal Boys' Water Polo Player of the Year, he was a unanimous selection as the best player in the Central Coast Section by the coaches as a junior. A three-time All-America selection and Academic All-America pick by USA Water Polo, Churukian was a member of the USA Water Polo Youth National Team.
 
A native of Manhattan Beach, California, Gleason starred at Mira Costa High School. He led the Mustangs to a 20-10 overall record and a 5-1 mark in the Bay League. Mira Costa was a CIF Southern Section finalist in 2018. The 6-7, 220-pound Gleason was a First Team All-Area selection by the Daily Breeze and a member of the Los Angeles Daily News All-Varsity Team as a senior. He earned All-CIF Division II First Team honors by the Southern California Water Polo Coaches Association in 2018. Gleason collected USA Water Polo 18 and Under honorable mention All-America honors. He was also named a USA Water Polo Academic All-American. 
 
Along with Churukian and Weigle, Seymour helped lead Sacred Heart Prep to a 26-2 overall record as a senior. The Gators won four Central Coast Section titles and captured four West Catholic Athletic League regular season and tournament titles. The 6-3, 185-pound standout earned All-CIF Central Coast Section honors each of his final two seasons, including a first team selection in 2018.  He was also an All-West Catholic Athletic League pick in 2017 and 2018. A co-captain of the Sacred Heart Prep swimming team, Walker was a CIF Central Coast Section medalist in the 100 breast, 400 free and 200 mixed medley relays as a senior. He was also named to the WBAL First Team in 2017, 2018 and 2019. Walker earned Academic All-American outstanding honors by USA Water Polo for the past three years, is an AP Scholar and was the Salutatorian of his senior class.
 
A member of the USA Water Polo Junior National Team, Jurasius comes to Stanford after starring at Campolindo High School in Moraga, California. The 6-6, 260-pound center scored more than 100 career goals and collected more than 80 career steals in his standout four-year career at Campolindo. He was an All-CIF North Coast Section selection his final three seasons and a two-time All-Area pick from the Bay Area News Group. He led Campolindo to the CIF North Coast Section Open Division title twice (2015 and 2018). The Cougars advanced to the championship match during Jurasius' sophomore and junior seasons. Jurasius also played on the USA Water Polo Cadet and Youth National Team. He is a USA Water Polo All-American and Academic All-American.   
 
Weigle, a 6-3, 195-pound standout out of Sacred Heart Prep was the 2018 CIF Central Coast Section Player of the Year by the coaches. Along with Churukian and Seymour, Weigle helped lead the Gators to a 26-2 record and four Central Coast Section titles. Sacred Heart Prep captured the West Catholic Athletic League regular season and tournament titles in each of his four years. Weigle scored 93 goals and added 11 assists as a senior. A three-time All-CIF Central Coast Section selection, he also earned First Team All-West Catholic Athletic League honors the past three seasons. 
 
The five signees bolster an experienced Cardinal roster which features 17 returning players from a team that won 23 games, won the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation regular-season and tournament titles, and reached the NCAA Championship game in 2018.
