STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford sailing finished the 2018-19 season with its 10th straight sweep of the Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference, its 14th straight win at the Big Sail, another sixth-place finish in the Fowle Trophy standings, and had four sailors earn All-America honors.
National Championships
» Stanford sailing capped one of the program's most successful Fall seasons with a third-place finish at the ICSA Match Race National Championship. Stanford defeated SUNY Maritime in the Petit Final, 2-1. The Cardinal went 7-2 in the round robin competition to earn the No. 3 seed heading into the quarterfinals. Stanford defeated Jacksonville in each of the first two races to advance, but lost both races to the eventual champions in the semifinal.
» Stanford finished the four-day Sperry Women's National Championships in 11th-place. In the A division, skipper Stephanie Houck and crews Camille White (1-6) and Ashton Borcherding (7-18) were 13th overall with 176 points, including four top-five finishes. Meanwhile, in the B division, skipper Sophia Sole teamed with crews Cassie Obel (1-8), Taylor Kirkpatrick (9-10, 15-16) and White (11-14), were ninth with 159 points.
» The Cardinal finished third at the Team Race National Championships. The bronze was the first medal for Stanford at the team race nationals since back-to-back third-place finishes in 2014-15. Stanford finished with a 17-8 record overall, only bettered by Yale, which won with a record of 21-4, and Georgetown, which finished at 20-5.
» Stanford concluded its 2019 campaign with an eighth-place finish at the Gill Coed Nationals Championships. In the third and final national championship event, Stanford finished the coed competition with 285 points. In the A division, skippers Romain Screve, Jack Parkin and Jacob Rosenberg, and crews Sammy Pickell and Kathryn Booker finished ninth with 155 points. Meanwhile, in the B division, skipper Wiley Rogers and crew Victoria Thompson, and skipper Telis Athansopoulos Yogo and crew Taylor Kirkpatrick combined to finish seventh with 130 points.
» Following the three Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICA) spring championships, Stanford finished sixth in the Fowle Trophy standings for the third consecutive year.
National Champion
» In November, sophomore Christina Sakellaris won the ICSA women's singlehanded national championship on Lake Michigan. She was the second Cardinal to win the title and the first since Anika Leersen in 2000.
» Sakellaris finished with 60 points to claim the title -- one better than Jacksonville's Charlotte Rose. Among the 18 sailors, Sakellaris won three of the 14 races. She also had 10 top-five finishes, which included all six races on the final day of competition. After eight races on Saturday, Sakellaris was second overall and eight points behind the leader. She took the lead after a second-place finish in the fourth race on Sunday (12th race overall). She won the next race to extend her lead, and held on for the win with a fifth-place finish in the finale.
Conference Sweep
» Stanford captured the Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference (PCCSC) Women's, Coed and Team Race championships to complete a 10th straight sweep of conference titles.
» On April 7, Stanford won its 12th straight PCCSC Team Race title. The Cardinal finished the conference regatta with a perfect 15-0 record. Stanford was led by skipper Jacob Rosenberg with crew Kathryn Booker, skipper Jack Parkin with crew Taylor Kirkpatrick, skipper Telis Athanasopoulos Yogo with crew Meg Gerli, and skipper Romain Screve with crew Sammy Pickell. Stanford swept the first and second round robin, and in the final four, the Cardinal defeated Santa Barbara, Cal Maritime and Hawaii. Cal Maritime finished second at 11-4.
» On April 21, Stanford won its 15th straight women's conference title. The Cardinal won with 55 points to beat out USC and UCSB, who finished in a tie for second with 69 points apiece. In the A divsion, Stanford was second with 28 points, just one behind USC. Skipper Stephanie Houck and crews Taylor Kirkpatrick and Ashton Borcherding combined to win five of the 10 races, and never finished lower than fifth among the 10 teams. The Cardinal was equally successful in the B division with just 27 points. Skippers Sophia Sole and Camille White and crews Cassie Obel and Madeline Bubb led Stanford to a first-place finish -- one-point better than UCSB. They won four races and added a pair of runner-up performances.
» On April 28, Stanford captured the PCCSC Coed championship. The Cardinal, which entered the week ranked as the No. 1 coed team in the nation, won its 10th consecutive coed conference title with 43 points. Santa Barbara was second with 68 points. In the A division, skipper Jacob Rosenberg and crew Kathryn Booker and Meg Gerli finished first with 25 points. In the 11 races, the Cardinal amassed four first-place finishes and three second-place showings. UCSB finished second with 37 points. Meanwhile, in the B division, Stanford won with just 18 points in 11 races. Skipper Jack Parkin and crew Taylor Kirkpatrick took the first six races and finished in first five times. Telis Athanasopoulos Yogo and Gerli competed in the final seven races and added two first-place finishes and two runner-ups.
» Stanford also claimed its second straight Match Race conference crown in September. The Cardinal topped Cal Maritime Academy, 2-1, in the finals. Stanford was led by skipper Jack Parkin and crews Mathew Hogan, Wiley Rogers and Victoria Thompson. The Cardinal was 4-1 in round robin competition with wins over Long Beach, Cal Poly, Santa Barbara and Hawaii, and its only defeat to CMA, who finished undefeated in round robin. The teams split the first two races of the finals, and in the final race, Stanford passed at the first mark and led on the second upwind, but a slow penalty kill and wind shift put CMA back ahead. Stanford then passed again at the second upwind mark and led to the finish.
Big Sail
» For the 14th consecutive year, Stanford sailing won the Big Sail over Cal. The Cardinal won four of the five divisions for a 4-1 victory over the Bears at St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco on Nov. 13.
» In the shadow of the Golden Gate bridge, the two programs race a best-of-three in five divisions -- the women's and grandmasters divisions were added this year. Stanford won the varsity (2-1), women's (2-0), young (2-0) and grandmasters (2-0), while Cal claimed the first two races in the masters division for its lone point of the festive regatta.
» Sophomore Jack Parkin served as skipper for the varsity and was joined by sophomore Mathew Hogan, senior Kathryn Booker and freshman Wiley Rogers.
» On shore, there is a battle of the bands, which Stanford also won, obviously.
Honorees» Kathryn Booker was named coed ICSA All-American crew, while Romain Screve, Jacob Rosenberg and Wiley Rogers were named honorable mention coed ICSA All-American skippers.
» Among those named to the All-PCCSC Women's team were skippers Stephanie Houck, Sophia Sole, Jack Parkin and Jacob Rosenberg. The all-conference crew honorees included Kathryn Booker, Meg Gerli and Taylor Kirkpatrick.
