Cardinal Opens at No. 5

STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford is ranked No. 5 in the first United Soccer Coaches poll of 2019 the organization announced Tuesday.
 
The nation's most successful collegiate men's soccer program over the last half-decade, Stanford has won three of the last four NCAA titles, five consecutive Pac-12 championships and posted a 77-14-18 (.789) overall record since 2014. The Cardinal returns nine starters to a team that went 12-4-5 in 2018 and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament.
 
Maryland tops the poll and is followed by No. 2 Indiana, No. 3 Akron, No. 4 Wake Forest and Stanford. In a marquee matchup on the season's opening weekend, the Cardinal plays at Akron on Monday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. ET.
 
Stanford's regular-season home opener is on Monday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. against No. 25 UC Irvine following a pair of free exhibitions against Saint Mary's (Aug. 20) and Pacific (Aug. 23). The Cardinal has posted a 44-6-10 (.817) record at home over the past five seasons with a goals against average of 0.53.
