Strong Across the Board

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford sailing registered a strong weekend across the board, capturing the Stu Nelson Trophy and topping all-comers at the PCCSC Match Race Championship.

Stanford's freshmen quartet of Michelle Lahrkamp, Abigail Tindall, Patricia Gerli and Hallie Schiffman cruised to the Stu Nelson Trophy victory at Connecticut College, beating a field of 16 and winning six races overall. The squad posted 16 top-three finishes over the two days of racing, finishing with 119 points – 11 better than Harvard in second place. Competing in A division, skipper Lahrkamp and crew Tindall held at least a share of first place from wire to wire, winning four races in all. A strong final five races, which included four top-three finishes, helped skipper Schiffman and crew Gerli capture second overall in B division.

Sailing at Stanford in Ideal-18s, skipper Jack Parkin and crew Victoria Thompson and Wiley Rogers went undefeated (8-0) at the PCCSC Match Race Championship to advance to the ICSA Match Race National Championship, besting boats from Cal Maritime, Cal Poly, UC Santa Barbara and Hawaii. Hawaii finished second at 5-3, followed by UCSB (4-4), Cal Poly (2-6) and Cal Maritime (1-7).

Competing at the Coed Showcase in St. Mary's City, Md., Stanford placed sixth of 18 teams. Skipper Jacob Rosenberg and crew Taylor Kirkpatrick teamed in A division to post five top-three finishes, including capturing a victory in the eighth leg of competition. Skipper Telis Athanasopoulos Yogo and crew Ashton Borcherding found a rhythm late in B division, finishing in the top-three in six of the final 10 races to finish sixth overall in the lineup. Boston University and Harvard shared top-billing with 224 points, followed by the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (239), Boston College (255), Dartmouth (262) and Stanford (269).

Next up for the Cardinal are the Women's Showcase Finals in Annapolis, Md., Captain Hurst Bowl in Hanover, N.H., and Stony Burke Interconference in Berkeley, Calif., Oct. 12-13.
