Cal Trumps Cardinal In Big Match

WOODSIDE, Calif. – The drama was present at Menlo Country Club on Wednesday afternoon for the second-annual Big Match between Stanford and California. Six pairs consisting of one man and one woman from each school competed in foursome match play, with the Golden Bears pulling out a 3.5-2.5 victory.

In the first match, Angelina Ye knocked in a putt on the 18th hole to halve the match with Ethan Ng. Cal's Connor Golembeski chipped in for birdie from off the green on 18 to win the first match for the Bears over Calista Reyes and Ashwin Arasu. Aline Krauter and Nate Menon got the Cardinal their first full point with a 2&1 win before Andrea Lee and Henry Shimp closed out a 3&2 win on the 16th hole. After trailing by five holes through 10, Mika Liu and Daulet Tuleubayev fought back to get the match to the 17th hole, where they lost 2&1. The final match of the night came down to Ziyi Wang and David Snyder versus Cal's Cooper Hunt and Sophia Lundell. Snyder would chip in on 16 to keep the match tied. The match came to the 18th hole tied, where Wang and Lundell would both hit beautiful approach shots onto the green. Wang's third shot, a putt, would wind up about eight feet short, and Lundell's putt would roll to within two feet and be conceded for a par. Wang's final putt of the night would come up mere inches short, as Cal clijnched the match with a 1up victory on the sixth and final pairing.

The Cardinal women return to the course on Friday when they begin play as the hosts of the Stanford Intercollegiate at Stanford Golf Course. The men are back in action a week from Friday at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate.
