COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Stanford started the Art Adamson Invitational on Thursday night with a pair of NCAA A-qualifying times at the Rec Center Natatorium.
The Cardinal amassed 205 points, enough for second place behind hosts Texas A&M (412) and above USC (203), Hawaii (166), Air Force (111) and Louisiana State (30).
The team of Jordan Greenberg, Hank Poppe, Neel Roy and Will Macmillan (1:19.25) started the evening session with a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay, good for an NCAA A-qualifying time.
Three Cardinal finished top-five in the 500-meter freestyle, led by Grant Shoults (4:12.74), who finished second after swimming the fastest preliminary time. Andrew Matejka (4:19.37) and Johannes Calloni (4:20.49) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
In the 200-meter individual medley, Shane Blinkman (1:46.78) led the way in fifth place, followed by 12th-place Jon Cook (1:48.53).
Greenberg (20.40) qualified for the 50-meter freestyle A-final, finishing eighth. Poppe (20.31) finished 12th with Macmillan (20.33) in 12th.
The Cardinal finished the night strong with a second A-cut, this time in the 400-yard freestyle relay with the team of Calloni, Poppe, Macmillan and Shoults (3:10.71).
On the diving side of the competition, Conor Casey (321.15) placed sixth in the 3-meter final while freshman Ethan Foster (265.80) just missed the final, finishing ninth in prelims.
Stanford returns to action on Friday for Day 2 of the Art Adamson Invitational. The preliminary session, which begins at 8 a.m. PT, includes the 400-meter individual medley, the 100-meter butterfly, the 200-meter freestyle, the 100-meter breaststroke and the 100-meter backstroke.
