STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford freshmen Charles Hicks and Ryan Oosting race in the the European under-20 cross country championships Sunday in Lisbon, Portugal.
Hicks will represent Great Britain and Oosting, 18, will run for the Netherlands. Each redshirted at Stanford this fall.
Hicks was born in London and lived in England until age 12. His family settled in Jacksonville, Florida, where Hicks starred at The Bolles School, running 8:49.62 for 3,200 meters.
Oosting, 18, is from Arlington, Massachusetts. His mother is Dutch and his father is half Dutch, and Ryan is a dual citizen of the U.S. and the Netherlands.
To qualify, Hicks was second at the British trials and Oosting fourth at the Dutch trials. Hicks is among six junior men on the British team. This will be his national team debut. Oosting raced for the Netherlands at the 2018 European U20 track and field championships, earning a bronze medal in the 3,000 meters.
A total of 602 runners from 40 countries will compete in seven races – including senior, under-23, under-20 men's and women's races, and a mixed team relay.
