STANFORD, Calif. – Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Andrew Thomas has been named to the 2019 Academic All-America® Division I second team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Thomas' award is the 10th for a Stanford soccer player all-time and fifth under Knowles Family Director of Men's Soccer Jeremy Gunn. Andrew Epstein and Eric Verso were on the third team together in 2015 and Epstein followed that up with a first-team selection in 2016. Collin Liberty was a third-team academic All-American a season ago.
A two-time All-Pac-12 first-team selection, Thomas is currently 10th in the country in goals against average (0.654) and 15th in solo shutouts (8). In two years as a starter, he has already put together 19 clean sheets, good for fourth in school history. His 0.841 career save percentage leads all active players and his 0.639 career goals against average is second.
An engineering physics major with a 3.98 GPA, Thomas missed Stanford's match against UC Irvine on Monday, Sept. 9 while he was with the U.S. Under-23 Men's National Team for training camp outside of San Diego. This summer, he was called for a combined preparation camp with players from the United States' Senior and U-23 Men's National Teams from May 26-June 2 in Annapolis, Md. and also participated in a U-23 training camp in Herriman, Utah from June 9-16. Raised in London, he was born in Moscow and holds triple citizenship (United Kingdom, United States, Russia).
Other CoSIDA men's soccer academic All-Americans include Bobby Warshaw (2009, 2010), Dominique Yahyavi (2010), Taylor Graham (2002) and Andrew Terris (2001).
