STANFORD, Calif. – Junior Catarina Macario has been named a finalist for the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy, annually awarded to the best player in college soccer.
Macario, the reigning Hermann Trophy award winner, enters Friday's College Cup semifinal having set virtually every single-season record in program history while leading the NCAA in almost every offensive category. The attacking midfielder is aiming to become the fifth player in NCAA history to win the award two years in a row – Morgan Brian (2013-14), Christine Sinclair (2004-05), Cindy Parlow (1997-98) and Mia Hamm (1992-93) are the only players in history to accomplish the feat.
Hailing from San Diego and majoring in communication, Macario leads the NCAA in goals (32), assists (23), points (87) and game-winning goals (12). Her 87 points are the third-most in NCAA history behind Hamm (98) and Sinclair (88) and are the most in program history by 22 points, well ahead of the previous program record held by Kelley O'Hara (2009).
Last year, Macario became Stanford's fifth student-athlete to win the Hermann Trophy, joining the likes of O'Hara (2009), Christen Press (2010), Teresa Noyola (2011) and Andi Sullivan (2017). The winner of the Hermann Trophy will be announced on Jan. 3 in St. Louis.
No. 1 Stanford continues its quest for a third national championship on Friday when it takes on No. 7 UCLA in the College Cup semifinal. The match kicks off at 6:30 at nearby Avaya Stadium in San Jose, California, and will air on ESPNU.
