STANFORD, Calif. – Makenzie Fischer and Ryann Neushul each scored four times, six other players added two goals and No. 1 Stanford closed out its regular season with a 22-4 win over No. 20 San Jose State on Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Cardinal's four seniors – Madison Berggren, Kat Klass, Cassidy Wiley and Mackenzie Wiley – were honored in a pregame ceremony for their spectacular careers. The group has led Stanford to an 85-14 record since 2016, including a national championship in 2017.
Â
Their regular-season home finale was never in doubt. Stanford (19-1, 6-0), already up 9-3 midway through the second quarter, reeled off 12 consecutive goals following a Matilda Moore 6-on-5 score for San Jose State (10-13, 2-4) with 3:31 to go in the first half. The Spartans wouldn't score for the next 17 minutes as Stanford closed out its first perfect MPSF regular season since 2015.
Â
Chloe Harbilas, Neushul and Aria Fischer scored on Stanford's first three possessions before Moore got SJSU on the board at 4:33 in the first. Berggren won the sprint before Harbilas' goal and the next two were the direct result of Cardinal steals.
Â
Berggren pushed it to 4-1 before Hannah Shabb scored on the power play, one of Stanford's six 6-on-5 tallies of the day. Makenzie Fischer rattled the cage twice on consecutive possessions late in the first to put Stanford up 7-1 after one.
Â
Berggren at even strength and Mackenzie Wiley on another power play got Stanford going in the second before Moore's aforementioned strike and the ensuing Stanford onslaught.
Â
Sarah Klass (2:21), Neushul (1:10) and Makenzie Fischer closed out the half with goals to make it 12-3 at intermission. Fischer scored hers off a feed from Aria Fischer with one second on the clock to clinch her sixth consecutive hat trick and 15th of the year.
Â
Kat Klass hit on a penalty (7:32) and Neushul (5:46) tacked on another coming out of the break. Shabb (5:02) an Aria Fischer (4:05) were next before Mackenzie Wiley drew an exclusion on Michelle Taikeff that set up Makenzie Fischer for a goal on the resulting power play.
Â
That score was Fischer's fourth of the day and 76th of the season, moving the junior past Melissa Seidemann and into second on Stanford's single-season list. Ellen Estes holds the record with 93 goals in 1998.
Â
Neushul scored again on the power play with 40 seconds to go in the third, her fourth to set a single-game career best.
Â
Thea Walsh played all four quarters in the cage and made eight saves.
Â
Stanford is the No. 1 seed in next weekend's MPSF Championship, which it will host Friday through Sunday. The Cardinal has a bye into the semifinals and will play the winner of No. 4 California and No. 5 San Jose State on Saturday, April 27 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are now on sale by visiting gostanford.com/tickets.
