INDIANAPOLIS – Stanford advanced all three of its boats into the Grand Finals at the NCAA Women's Rowing Championships with strong performances on Saturday at the Indianapolis Rowing Center at Eagle Creek Park.
The Cardinal captured wins in two of its three semifinal races, with the second varsity eight and varsity four winning its heat. The varsity eight placed second in its semifinal. All three will race for a NCAA Championship on Sunday morning. Stanford is one of five schools, along with Washington, Ohio State, Michigan and Texas, to advance all three boats to the Grand Finals.
The varsity eight was strong throughout its semifinal heat, as the top three boats separated themselves from the field midway through the race. The Cardinal placed second with a time of 6:33.781, behind Washington (632.931). Ohio State was the final team to advance from the heat with a time of 633.848.
Stanford will face California, Washington, Ohio State, Michigan and Texas in Sunday's varsity eight Grand Final, set for 8:12 a.m. PT.
The second varsity eight was in command nearly the entire semifinal on Saturday, crossing the line first with a time of 651.761. Michigan placed second with a time of 653.932, while Virginia (657.927) edged out Brown (659.247) for the final spot in the Grand Final.
The Cardinal will race against Washington, Ohio State, Michigan, Virginia and Texas in Sunday's second varsity eight Grand Final, set for 7:48 a.m. PT.
The varsity four was dominant in its semifinal, leading wire-to-wire for the heat victory. Stanford, which led by open water for a good portion of the race, finished with a time of 732.328. Ohio State (735.532) and California (735.838) placed second and third, respectively, to join the Cardinal in Sunday's Grand Final.
