SAN FRANCISCO - A pair of Cardinal wrestlers won the California Collegiate Open, Saturday, at the Student Life and Events Center on the campus of San Francisco State.
Freshman Jaden Abas, who wrestled unattached, and redshirt sophomore Foster Karmon won titles at 149 and 174 pounds, respectively. It is the third tournament win of the year for Abas, who also took home titles at the Reno Tournament of Champions and the Southern Scuffle. It is the first win of the year for Karmon, who was the runner-up at the Battle at The Citadel in November.
Redshirt sophomore Ethan Woods was the runner-up at 157 pounds, finishing 3-1 overall. Redshirt sophomore Haydn Maley was fourth at 285 pounds after having to injury default in the third-place bout. Maley posted a pair of falls to start the tournament.
True freshman Logan Ashton dropped his opening match at 125 pounds before battling back to win the consolation bracket. He was 4-1 in the tournament with three falls. Senior Jake Barry made his season debut in the tournament, finishing 1-2 with a fall in the opening round.
Stanford is back in action on Friday, Jan. 31 at No. 6 Arizona State. Wrestling begins at 5 p.m. PT on Pac-12 Networks.
