Early Runs Guide Victory

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford (18-3) finished a perfect weekend of play from the DeMarini Invitational on Sunday, recording a 9-1 victory in five innings over Rhode Island (4-14) from Smith Family Stadium.

With the run-rule win, Stanford has now recorded five consecutive victories via the run-rule – matching its longest run of such games since 2008.

The Cardinal came out swinging on Sunday, scoring five runs in the first inning, highlighted by a Taylor Gindlesperger RBI-triple. Gindlesperger finished the game 1-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI.

The Gindlesperger triple plated senior Teaghan Cowles, who went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored while hitting out of the leadoff spot in the order.

Freshman Kaitlyn Lim capped a three-run second inning for the Cardinal with her third home run of the season – a no-doubt, two-run shot to right field. The round-tripper was her second of the weekend.

Senior Montana Dixon single-handedly extended the lead to 9-0 in the third, connecting for her second home run of the weekend.

Freshman Alana Vawter got the start and earned the victory after tossing three scoreless innings and allowing just three hits with four strikeouts. The Kansas City, Mo. native improved to 7-0 with the win.

Sarah Gunderson was saddled with the loss for Rhode Island after allowing eight runs (five earned) on six hits over one inning of work. Gunderson fell to 4-5 with the loss.

Sunday's game concluded a 15-game homestand for the Cardinal, as Stanford will now prepare to play in the Tennessee Invitational featuring Tennessee, East Tennessee State and Toledo next weekend.
