As Stanford's student-athletes have departed campus for home, it's time to get to know the members of the sailing team. Today's edition features Patricia Gerli:
How did you get your start with sailing?
While growing up my whole family spent our summers at the Jersey Shore and lived with my grandmother. Both my parents grew up sailing, and they signed us up for the sailing program at our local yacht club. I started sailing in New Jersey when I was about 7 and after a couple years of summer program, I began competing year-round and traveling nationally.
Why did you choose Stanford?
Having grown up on the east coast, I really liked the idea of immersing myself in a completely new environment and mindset that both Stanford and the bay area offer. My older sister also graduated from Stanford and always spoke so highly of her experience. The few times I visited her I felt very drawn to the campus, and I really admired both the strong academics and successful sailing program!
Favorite memory from the team?
One of my favorite memories from this year is when we went to go watch out our match race team compete in Big Sail, against Berkley, at St. Frances Yacht club in San Francisco. Getting to spend the afternoon at a beautiful yacht club and supporting our teammates was really fun, and even the band was there. Many alumni also competed in the event and its very prevalent how strong the Stanford sailing community is, even once you graduate.
What do you enjoy doing when not on the water?
While I am off the water, I really enjoy spending time outside enjoying our campus. Since beautiful, warm weather is the regular I often hang out with my friends and do schoolwork outside or go for a run.
What are you currently doing away from campus?
During this time away from campus I have been spending time with my family in Park City, Utah, which is where my brother lives. We try and go for hikes almost every day to get fresh air, have been watching many movies, cooking, doing puzzles, etc. but I am very ready and excited for classes to start!
How has your Stanford experience helped you manage the COVID-19 situation?
Managing through COVID-19 has been challenging but what has really helped me adjust during these unique times have been all the resources Stanford provides us with, including my athletic advisor, my professors being extremely understanding, and support from my freshman dorm community including my RAs and RFs. My coaches and teammates have also helped me manage this situation because even though our season was cut short, we have been here to comfort each other and maintain our strong team bond, despite not being together. We have frequent zoom meetings and have even made a quarantine book and movie list. Because of all this support from Stanford, I have been able to keep a fairly positive mindset!
