CHICAGO – Taking part in the United States Women's National Team's (USWNT) first training camp in eight months, senior Catarina Macario and junior Naomi Girma have been selected to participate with the reigning world champions from Oct. 18-28 in Commerce City, Colorado. The two active Stanford players are joined by four alumnae: Jane Campbell, Tierna Davidson, Kelley O'Hara and Sophia Smith.
Stanford is one of three colleges with current players on the roster, and the only school with multiple players. O'Hara's 131 career appearances are the second-most on the roster, while Davidson and Campbell have been capped 26 and three times, respectively. Smith, the top pick in the 2020 NWSL Draft, is still looking for her first appearance for the USWNT.
Hailing from San Diego, but born in Brazil, Macario led the NCAA in goals (32), assists (23) and points (87) in 2019, all of which were single-season program records. She is a two-time MAC Hermann Award winner and three-time ESPNW Player of the Year, while also earning Academic All-America honors. Macario has featured for the United States in previous junior training camps, as well as with the U-23 team in domestic competition. Her story was detailed earlier this year on GoStanford.com in 'The Magic of Macario.'
Girma, a San Jose native, earned All-America honors in 2019 and was the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year. The NCAA College Cup's Most Outstanding Defensive Player, Girma earned her first call up to the full national team in 2019 with the Identification Camp. She also helped lead the USWNT U-20 squad qualify for the World Cup, which has been pushed to 2021 in Costa Rica.
Stanford enters 2020 as the defending national champion after setting a program record with 102 goals scored in 2019. The Cardinal has won three of the last nine national championships and an unprecedented five consecutive outright Pac-12 championships.
