Gameday Hub: UCLA

  • Stanford travels to UCLA on Saturday evening for a showdown at the Rose Bowl. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. The Cardinal has won three straight games on the road, defeating Cal 24-23 in Big Game, No. 23 Washington 31-26 at Husky Stadium and Oregon State 27-24 at Reser Stadium. Stanford, who is now bowl eligible, announced on Sunday that the game at UCLA will be its final contest of the season. After being on the road since Dec. 1, the Cardinal will decline postseason opportunities.
  • Eleven Cardinal have made their first career starts so far this season: CB Ethan Bonner, OLB Stephen Herron, RB Austin Jones, OLB Thunder Keck, CB Zahran Manley, ILB Ricky Miezan, DE Thomas Schaffer, CB Salim Turner-Muhammad, WR Brycen Tremayne, DT Dalyn Wade-Perry and SS Noah Williams.
  • If you don’t count two pass attempts during the 2018 season, Davis Mills has played in 12 games over the last two season ... in other words, a full season. In that span, Mills is 254-of-388 (65.5%) for 3,040 yards and 15 touchdowns against just five interceptions.
  • Stanford has flipped the script on third downs during its three-game winning streak. The offense is converting 56.1% of third downs in its three wins versus just 31% in the two losses. The defense is holding opponents to a 44.7% success rate in the three wins compared to 68% in the losses.
  • Austin Jones’s seven rushing touchdowns through five games is tied for third-most among all Cardinal dating back to 2000. He trails just Bryce Love (2017) and Toby Gerhart (2009) who had eight rushing TDs through the first five games of a season.
  • Junior WR Brycen Tremayne made his first career start on Saturday night at Oregon State. He finished with a career-high four catches for 58 yards in the win. Tremayne, who began his career as a walk-on and was placed on scholarship prior to the 2019 season, is the Cardinal’s nominee for the Burlsworth Trophy. For his career Tremayne has 13 catches, 10 of which have gone for touchdowns or first downs.
  • Junior Simi Fehoko found his groove in the second half of the 2019 season, setting the school record for yards per reception at 23.58. He finished second nationally in that category and was the top leading receiver nationally in yards per reception entering 2020. Fehoko set a career high with 110 yards on Saturday night at Oregon State and tied his career high with six receptions. His longest reception of the night was a 57-yard catch on the backend of a flea-flicker, pulling in an acrobatic catch at the 1-yard line. Fehoko has 21 catches for 354 yards so far this season, an average of 16.9 yards per reception. For his career, Fehoko has 46 receptions for 926 yards. His 20.1 yards per reception clip would fall just short of Bob Blunt’s (1964-66) 21.09 yards per reception career mark for the school record.
  • For the second consecutive season, fifth-year kicker Jet Toner made the game-winning field goal at Oregon State, drilling a 39 yarder with 1:48 to play on Saturday. Toner made his lone PAT attempt in the win and is now 112-of-112 in his career, setting the school reocrd for most consecutive extra-point attempts made. Toner broke Conrad Ukropina’s (2013-16) previous school record (108). Toner was named a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, given annually to the nation’s top football scholar-athlete. He graduated with a degree in science, technology and society and is currently pursuing his master’s in media studies. For his career, he is 54-of-68 (79.4%) on field goals with a career long of 51 yards. Toner’s 54 career field goals made are the third-most in school history. He now is responsible for 274 points in his career, also third-most in Cardinal history. He surpassed Stepfan Taylor (270 from 2009-12) in the win at Oregon State.
